Murrah breed buffaloes distributed

Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Minister Govindas Konthoujam during a distribution function of Murrah Buffalo at Veterinary Dispensary Complex, Ningthoukhong said the State Government is planning to establish a piggery farm at Andro and a milk plant at Moirang.
The buffalo breed (Murrah Buffalo) that was distributed during the function today are normally bred for dairy production.
It can produce upto 10 to 25 litres of milk per day.
Previously in the first phase of the project 'Adoption of Milch Buffalo in and around Loktak lake' a total of 40 expecting Murrah cows were distributed to selected farmers of Thanga, Kumbi and Ningthoukhong.
NEC provided Rs 5 crore to the project with additional transportation charge of Rs 11000 (Haryana to Imphal).
The buffalo cost around Rs 79,000 per head.
The scheme not only provides free construction of shed but also provides free fodder for the animal.
Added together a beneficiary is granted an estimate of Rs 1 lakh provision under the scheme.
Speaking at the distribution function Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that the Government is scheming to establish a piggery farm at Andro and a milk plant at Moirang.
The Murrah buffalo breed, which is bred for its dairy productivity, according to Govindas, would help meet the required amount of milk supply, which at present falls behind 81,000 litres against the State's total demand.
The Minister cautioning the beneficiaries to take extra care of the animal said the Loktak lake and its surrounding areas were selected for the mass distribution of these animal because the abundance of cattle feed in these areas.
The Minister further appealed the beneficiaries to contact the Veterinary and Animal Husbandry department in case any of detection of any abnormality in the Murrah buffaloes.
The distribution function was also attended by Parliamentary Secretary M Prithviraj, MLA T Mangibabu and S Bira.
