Imphal, September 23 2026: Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh extended congratulations to Saikhom Mirabai Chanu on her winning a silver medal at the Japan Asian Games 2026 today.

Interacting with the star weightlifter virtually from the Civil Secretariat at Mantripukhri, Khemchand told Mirabai that she has yet again made Manipur and the whole country proud.

The CM said Mirabai's hard work, discipline and perseverance are an inspiration to all young sports- persons of the country, especially the youth of Manipur.

He added that the State Government will continue to support sportspersons and will provide all possible help to promote sports in the State.

Khemchand further said that her achievement has added another medal to India's tally and made the Nation proud.

Manipur is proud of her remarkable feat and is wishing for her continuous success in the future.

The people of Manipur are with her, he added.

Mirabai Chanu, while interacting with the Chief Minister, said that she was very happy to see the people of Manipur supporting her and standing by her.

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has ended India's 28 years drought and created history by winning a silver medal, her first ever Asian Games medal, today in the women's 48 kg category weightlifting in Japan.

Mirabai's silver for India in this category came 28 years after Karnam Malleswari won a silver at the Bangkok Asian Games in 1998 .

Mirabai lifted 87 kg in the snatch and 111 kg in the clean and jerk, registering a total lift of 198 kg to clinch the silver medal.

Noting Mirabai's incredible journey, Secretary, Youth Affairs and Sports, Naorem Praveen Singh, said that work for the opening of the Mirabai Weightlifting Academy is on in full swing.

Home Minister Govin-das Konthoujam, Art and Culture Minister Kh Loken Singh, and MLA of Kon-thoujam Assembly Consti- tuency Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh and Govt spokesperson also congratulated Mirabai Chanu on her winning the silver medal.
