Imphal, May 08 2025:
Students of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) continued their protest for the second day in front of the under construction new OPD Block, demanding immediate removal of the Director, Dean, and Sub-Dean.
Holding placards with messages such as "Why Director Wants Us To Be Naked," "We Accept Punishment Not Harassment", "We Condemn Sexual Harassment" and "We Demand Removal of Director, Dean and Sub Dean," the protesting students alleged that the RIMS Director used inappropriate and abusive language against them including female students, which they consider sexual harassment.
The students alleged they were subjected to harsh criticism and humiliation by the RIMS Director for their attire at an internal dance competition and for attending an off-campus picnic.
They also claimed that the Dean and Sub-Dean of the institution had subjected them to mental harassment.
According to a report by North East Live, the protesters claimed that the RIMS Director made disturbing remarks, allegedly telling students to "dance naked", "commit suicide," or that he would "hang them".
In a statement to Northeast Live, the students strongly condemned the Director's actions and criticised the Dean and SubDean for failing to intervene.
They insisted that the silence of both officials amounted to complicity and called for all three to be removed from their positions.
Notably, the RIMS issue has gone viral on social media, with many users condemning the institution's Director and questioning his conduct.
The protesting students include those from MBBS, BDS, MRI, MLT, BASLP and BSc Nursing courses.
Despite attempts by the Imphal West police led SP Ksh Shivakanta to negotiate with the students, no solution was reached.
When the Dean and SubDean approached the agitating students for talks, they were gheraoed, and the students refused to meet them.
Later, some student representatives visited Raj Bhavan in the afternoon and presented their demands before the Secretary to the Governor.
The students said that the RIMS Director also came to Raj Bhavan but they chose not to hold a talk with him.
The students vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met, and at the time of filing this report late in the evening, they remained stationed in front of the new OPD Block (RIMS) .
