Surgeons remove foetus from man

Imphal, November 07 2009: For the first time in the medical history of JN Hospital, a foetus of a child has been removed from a man today.

Though the foetus was yet to attain full maturity, the foetus has developed structures of a child with head, shoulders, back, abdomen and navel clearly visible.

The foetus known as foetus in fetu in medical jargon was removed from the abdomen from one A Suraj (24) s/o Maharani of Mayang Imphal Kokchai after a surgical operation.

The foetus weighs six kilograms.

Consultant Surgeon Dr L Joykumar and his team conducted the operation at JN Hospital today.

The other surgeons are Dr Ng Jiban, Dr A Birjit and Dr Ramthoi.

The anaesthetist team included Dr Thoihenba, Dr Opendro and Dr Ibemhal.

Speaking to media persons after conducting the operation successfully, Dr Joykumar explained that foetus in fetu is a twin.

It should divide into two in the uterus of the mother.

But in rare cases, one embryo enters into another embryo.

When this embryo develops into a foetus and ultimately to a child, the other embryo remains inside the child.

When the child attains maturity, the embryo inside starts developing slowly.

Being a male, Suraj has no uterus.

The embryo in the advanced stage of development was detected in his abdomen, Dr Joykumar said.

Its size was equivalent to that of a foetus carried by a woman in the seventh month of pregnancy.

A Suraj has been undergoing diagnosis since five days back after he was admitted in JN Hospital with complaints of pain in the abdomen.

While his abdomen was bulging out, his body was becoming emaciated.

After conducting relevant investigations, it was confirmed that a large lump was inside his abdomen.

Following an understanding to open the body and see the object even if it was a case of cancer, Suraj was operated upon today, Dr Joykumar said.

Claiming that lump removed from Suraj was a foetus, Dr Joykumar said that a large nerve connected to navel of the foetus was supplying food to it.

This was the factor for Suraj becoming emaciated while his abdomen was bulging out.

There have been such cases in medical science but for JN Hospital it was the first case, the Surgeon said.

He also rejoiced on conducting the operation successfully even though it took one and a half hour.
