Imphal, December 04 2009: While disclosing that the mobile phones in Manipur are being intercepted by security agencies for the security of the country, Chief General Manager of North East Telephone Circle-II Ranjan Sanyal has assured that pre-paid mobile services will continue in the North Eastern States.

Talking to mediapersons on the sidelines of inaugurating a newly constructed BSNL Bhavan here today, Ranjan Sanyal informed that interception of the mobile phones by security agencies is being carried out with the knowledge of the Union Home Ministry and there is appropriate legal sanction for this.

In response to a question, he assured that pre-paid mobile services will continue in the North Eastern States.

Nobody wants cancellation of this service, he said, adding that mobile handsets, which have been rendered useless, on account of not conforming to the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) may be made usable again after ensuring allotment of required identity numbers.

The Chief General Manager further informed that from within January next year, the facility for 3G (Third Generation) enabled smartphone services will be made available to the mobile phone subscribers of BSNL.

Based on WCDMA technology, the 3G mobile telecommunication service will provide facilities like video conferencing, online gaming, high speed interest, video streaming, live IPTV and video-on demand, he explained, adding that the service will be extended upto Bishnupur and Thoubal districts.

For the first phase in Manipur, five WiMAX towers which can provide broadband connectivity wireless in remote areas where providing service through physical line is not feasible are also ready for commissioning in Sawombung, Thoubal, Kakching, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur, he announced, while admitting the erratic power supply is a major problem in rendering services in Manipur.

Earlier, inaugurating the newly constructed BSNL Bhavan as chief guest, the Chief General Manager exhorted the BSNL employees to dedicate 50 percent of the work toward ensuring the satisfaction of the customers.

Informing that efforts are being made to upgrade the billing system of BSNL, he informed that ongoing construction work on the Imphal Sewerage Project has given created a major difficulty in providing telephone service to the people.

The Chief General Manager also presented the Vishist Sanchar Seva Padak to the Engineer of BSNL Imphal West, Inaobi at the occasion.

Carrying a cash reward of Rs 21,000 and a silver medal, the award is given to the best employee of the year under NE-Telecom Circle-II, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.

The General Manager of BSNL Manipur R MM Krishna, Chief Engineer (Civil) NE-II Abraham Jacob, GM of ETR LM Sanwal and other officials were also present at the inaugural function.
