Shanti Thokchom's Life Experiences
- Part 16 -
Life in Bombay - 4

By: Shanti Thokchom *

Anyway, during my stint working for Simone, her older sister Farah Khan and we too hit off good. She loved and adored her nephews so much so that she always wanted to show them off to her friends as she was an exclusive jewellery designer for the Bollywood stars.

In one such visits, she took me and her nephew to the Bandra west apartment of er friends ....the Khans.... ...Salman Khan....and his brothers and only sister.....!

They went ga-ga over her nephew and were busy catching up with their lives, sitting there outside the patio!! I was sitting in their living room reading magazines... and who do you think came out?....none other than ..Salman Khan........!!

I did not pay that much attention because to me he is just Salman Khan ..the actor and not God.....!! I like him as a good looking and goofy actor ..boy-next-door kind of actor and nothing beyond that! Other than that he was a normal person like any of us!!

But he was very curious and just anxious as to why a tiny woman like me was not at all bothered/affected at seeing such a hugely worldwide popular actor like him!! He was walkng up and down their living room quite few times to get some attention from me but I was burying my nose into reading the juicy gossip magazines !!

His personal assistants address him as "baba" as a term of endearment. I think he knows he is adored all over the world by gals and alike !!! I am sure he is narcissistic too!! He is always shirtless when we saw him in his house ..flexing his muscles for all to see.....especially to his swooning female fans who always gather near his Bandra apartment ..

He always go out to his open balcony once every now and then and gives Darshan (sightings) to the ones gathered outside! He knows which angle of his pose to show his adoring fans!!

I found it hilarious because of such adoration by his fans that he has to keep up with this image....his male fans wants to be like him so they can get popular with the chicks while his female fans are ready to die for him as they long for men like him in their lives!!

Such is our fascination with movie stars!!! But in reality, he is just a goofy guy who craves for attention all the time which makes it hard for him to stick to anyone for long!! Enough of Salman Khan now...!!

Let me now tell you what happened when I reached home to tell my sisters and her friends that I saw Salman Khan.. even before I could finish my sentence... I saw them almost faint and fall to the ground ...they shrieked out loud "Iche shanti saw Salman Khan" and touched my hands as if they were in a trance......!!

I just could not understand their hysteria over him...!! I guess they were just foolishly in love with his image or something!! I told them "Hingchabis!! (witches) he is just a normal guy.. and nothing else" but they kept on insisting "Adu oirasu ...nang di mabu urak labani..eikhoigi thamoigi ningthouni.... " and some other bunch of crap.....

Next day they decided to make their pilgrimage to that Bandra Bandstand Balcony where the jokester was flexing his muscle every now and then for his crazy fans .

Another time, Farah took me to Shah Rukh Khan's house in Bandra West to meet his new born son. He was very nice man. He is a chain smoker and moved around with bodyguards everywhere. His wife Gauri was short and very soft spoken and warm hearted. I could see they were very much an adoring couple.. considering both of them came from Hindu and Muslim families. They are the very epitome of perfect blend of such diversity!!

I dont know if King Khan still stays there or nor but I think he must have moved to another bigger house as it has been 7 years since I met them with Farah. I saw him again at Breach Candy Hospital when he came to visit Juhi Chawla who had sprained her ankle while filming a dance sequence in Mauritius!!

He was immediately surrounded by people who were there for the patients!! Word spread fast that King Khan was there on the 6th floor! And Godness gracious!! they all descended on that floor like swarms of ants within seconds!!

I know how he must be feeling..no privacy ..no time for himself ....nor for his family and friends...!! But he is prepared for that as he is a public figure!! When you are in the public eye, it comes with the territory!!!

I saw that he wanted a puff so bad but due to the hordes gathered outside Juhi's door, he was getting very jittery and anxious! I asked him if he would like to use the emergency stair case to go smoke near the open window!! He was relieved and I had to request the people to let him go smoke in the fire exit stairway!!

And the next few minutes of his visit, I had to be a gate keeper to prevent people from gatecrashing into that room!!! Everyone asked why I hadn't taken his autograph...I said I did not much care for that!!

The only nasty film personality I came across was Mazhar Khan..(Zeenat Aman's hubby). I guess he knew he was dying anyway of Pancreatic cancer or something and it was hard for him to come to terms with his dying young that he kept being mean to all.

I felt bad for his wife whom he always got nasty with if and whenever we went to do something in his room when he was hospitalized in Breach Candy.

The most lovable film guy I saw was Prem Chopra who would go jogging in Bandra joggers' park. He would always oblige his fans by stopping to sign autographs while he was on his regular jogs there.

Anyway......its all too unreal to talk about these star sightings after 6-7 years !! I have more stories to share .........later!

To be continued..........!!
