Quality seed production of rice (HYV) for doubling farm income under PPP model

Rice cultivation is very popular and important because it is the major staple food crop of Manipur and no option of cultivation of other suitable crops in the rice field during the Kharif season.

With the increasing population, we need more food grains. Using quality seed of rice is one of the criteria for improvement of production and productivity of rice. Manipur has average rice area of 1.765 lakh ha and it alone requires quality seed of 2640 MT every year at 25% SRR. Therefore, getting quality seed is a major challenge in the State of Manipur.

Response/Initiative

Shri Sanabam Jogendro Kumar Singh of Yairipok Yambem is a seed grower, progressive farmer of Imphal East, Manipur. He participated in the training programme on “Quality Seed Production of rice inbred and hybrid variety for food security in the NEH region” and in the technical workshop on “Enhancing rice production and productivity through recommendation of HYVs/Hybrids and their improved agronomic practices for NEH region” organised and conducted by directorate of Research, CAU, Imphal under ICAR seed project.

After acquiring the knowledge of seed production of rice and its scope and feasibility, the farmer actively participated in the participatory seed production programme on rice as a leader of the participants since 2012.

Results/Outcomes

Out of the 10-ha land of the farmer’s family, 4 ha is suitable for seed production of rice. In 2011-12 his family income from the said area of 4 ha was Rs. 11,010 x 4 = Rs. 44,040 only @ 10 kg-1 as rice grain. In 2012-13 and 2013-14 with the practice of seed production programme on rice with ICAR seed project, CAU, Imphal at the procurement seed rate @ Rs. 18 kg.

His income had increased to Rs. 62,000 x 4 = 2,48,000 and Rs. 59,170 x 4 = Rs. 2,36,680 respectively from the said area of rice cultivation. With the increase in seed procurement rate of the University to Rs 22 kg-1 in 2014-15 and Rs 23 kg-1 in 2016-17 his income had successfully been raised to Rs. 83,000 x 4 = Rs. 3,32000; Rs. 81,000 x 4 = Rs. 3,24,000 and Rs. 84,150 x 4 = Rs. 3,36,600 for the year 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 respectively.

As far as local rate is kg-1 and Rs. 16 kg-1 in the month of November and December during the year 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively.

Evidence/Impact

The average net profit of quality seed (rice) production is calculated at Rs. 73,864 which is more than the double of net profit of grain (rice) production of Rs. 32,896 (i.e. 124.5% higher). It is a generalized information which can be extended to the progressive farmers for making their farm income double or more than double as well as to meet the large-scale demand of quality seed (rice) for rice farmer.

Another mechanism for making more profit/farm income is the proper mechanization in the cultivation process i.e. transplantation, weeding, harvesting, and threshing etc., which will pull down the cost of cultivation because now-a-days the cost of agriculture labour is very high.
