Mathematics and Science Communication
Workshop/Seminar for Media Persons
Organised by Vigyan Prasar & National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC),
Department of Science & Technology, Government of India
Venue: Manipur Press Club, Imphal
Dear Editor/Bureau Chief,
We are organising a workshop-seminar on Mathematics and Science Communication for media persons at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal on May 3, 2013 at 11am. The
workshop will be addressed by scientists and mathematicians.
2012-13, as you might be aware, has been declared the National Mathematics Year to mark the great mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan's 125th birth anniversary. The media workshop series is being organized by Vigyan Prasar, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Science & Technology and the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science & Technology, Government of India, to create awareness about the importance of mathematics and its pivotal role in the
progress and development of the society. As 2013 too has been declared the International Year of Mathematics of Planet Science, the mathematics popularization activities
would continue this year as well.
The idea is to initiate the media into coverage of issues related to mathematics. We also want the media highlight the achievements of our mathematicians. Although India has had a rich tradition of mathematics in ancient and medieval periods, it is indeed sad that the International PISA rating of 2010 ranked India as 2nd last from the bottom in maths education. Media coverage of mathematics will put pressure on academicians and policy-makers to take steps to make mathematics teaching an interesting learning experience as against the learning-by-rote approach adopted today.
It will also attract more students to mathematics and ensure that measures at taken end to the math phobia suffered by students at large.
Yours sincerely,
Y S Gill
