About MLTR
As Guwahati is all set to welcome the popular rock band MLTR, let us also refresh our memories about the origin of the band and have a glimpse at how it all began.
Way back in the year 1988, Jascha Richter, the vocalist and the keyboard player of the band, planned to put up a band together in order to perform his songs. He joined Kåre Wanscher, his high school friend and drummer and later he recruited guitarist Mikkel Lentz, who was at that time, associated with his group the ‘Rocking Studs’. As the group was still in need of another musician, they approached Søren Madsen, another guitarist who was associated with Led Zeppelin, the English Rock band, to join in on bass guitar.
The newly formed band quickly recorded a demo tape, intending to send it to the Rock Grand Prix competition in their hometown, Aarhus, as Jascha Richter already had a number of original songs.
Also, they had to settle with a name quickly and so Richter hurriedly wrote Michael Learns to Rock, as the name of the sender in the competition. Later Richter admitted that it was actually named after Michael Jackson and that he regretted giving the band that name but since the band tasted success very quickly, they decided to stick with the name and over the time got used to it.
MLTR first publicly performed on May 22 1988, in Rock Grand Prix at Aarhus’s biggest venue, Ridehuset and came up as one of the two winning teams, and continued playing live. Finally they signed a record deal with the Danish label Medley in 1989, but did not release their first album until September 1991.
Although the band got some initial disappointments, "The Actor", topped the Danish chart and also did well in Norway, Sweden, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines. Hard work and passion paid off as in January 1992, the album topped the Danish charts, followed soon after by success in Asia, selling 25,000 copies and earning gold status in Indonesia alone. MLTR was now already making waves and soon the world was about to witness and enjoy one of the most popular and heart-warming songs of all times.
