Coins unravel Northeast history at Calcutta show
The Telegraph | Sudeshna Banerjee | Calcutta, Dec. 25:
An exhibition of coins and bank notes held in Calcutta over the Christmas weekend turned out to be a lesson in the history of the Northeast.
The story from Manipur is no less interesting. Gharib Niwaz (1709-1748), informs the captions to Sharma’s exhibits, was perhaps the first Meitei king who struck coins in bell metal. Later, rulers struck coins in gold and silver.
These coins, issued from 1756 to 1831, were called Sana Tanga and Lupa Tanga. One such coin was on view, from the reign of Chaurajit Singh (1806-1812). Square and thick, the coin had Devnagari inscriptions on both sides.
