TODAY -
A time of sufferings and successes
Times of India | K Sarojkumar Sharma, TNN | Dec 31, 2011, 04.38AM IST
The year 2011 was full of ups and downs for Manipur. A blockade of national highways by tribal agitators caused immense hardships to the people of the state for about 120 days. Kukis and Nagas blocked the Imphal-Silchar and Imphal-Dimapur highways supporting and opposing the up-gradation of Sadar Hills subdivision to a district.
Amid such sufferings, the strife-torn state continued to make its mark in various fields. Irom Chanu Sharmila again hit the headlines when she completed the 11th year of her hunger strike against the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act on November 5.
A number of players from the state, which is regarded as a sports power house, were chosen for the 2012 London Olympics. Manipur has produced nine Olympians and two Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna winners and a huge number of players who have taken part in international contests.
Pugilist Mayengbam Suranjoy and wushu player W Sandhyarai Devi received the prestigious Arjuna Award for 2011.
