Indigenous Games of Northeast will be Promoted

New Delhi, August 6,2014:

Indigenous games of Northeast India will be having its golden days soon. MODIfied Northeast India is promoting the indigenous games of the region. Congratulting the athletes from Northeast India, particularly Manipur and Tripura for the spectacular performance at the just concluded Commonwealth Games at Glasgow, the initiative is promoting traditional and indigenous games of the region which will revive to add fuel to emerging Indian Sports soon.

It was a proud moment for every Northeast Indians when Khumukcham Sanjita Devi wins the first Medal for the Country in the opening day of Commonwealth Games 2014 by winning a Gold medal in women's weightlifting event. The MODIfied Northeast India also acknowledges the struggles of athletes from the region, despite dozens of problems and conflicts faced by them and their family members in the journey of historic moments.

The Initiative have selected few games from the Northeast region to be promoted - Mukna, Thang-Ta, Sarit Sarak, Kangjei and Cheibi of Manipur; Inbuan and Insuknawr of Mizoram; Naga Wresting of Nagaland; Hinam Turnam of Arunachal Pradesh;Dhopkhel of Assam; Achugwui Phan sohlaimung of Tripura. These games are the traditional version of odern day Wrestling, Judo, Fencing and Kabaddi.

There will be large scale competition and festivals of these traditional games and sports in the entire Northeast region.The initiative is also working for providing opportunities to the Northeast athletes in association with National level Sports promoters and sponsors.

Splendid and record breaking performances of Haryana athletes in Wresting is due to their close association with the taditional "Akharas" which have been training young men and women for ages.It is obvious that athletes from Delhi, Haryana and UP can perform better than rest of the Country. These states are situated at a Stone throw distance from the National Capital. And getting benefits of every modern and scientific technology in sports ahead of other region.

The Northeast India located at the farthest corner of the Country lacks sponsorship, exposure to modern technology and other facilities. To fill the gap, MODIfied Northeast India is seeking supports and sponsors from industrialists and companies to boost the moral of our athletes, in addition to the Central Government projects.

Promoting indigenous games like Mukna, Thang-Ta, and Cheibi as first priority , Naorem Mohen, Founder of MODIfied Northeast India said that we must lead Indian sports in games like Wrestling, Judo and Fencing which are conducive to our physical, genetic and psychological environments. "Our forefathers have been playing the indigenous version of these games as early as 5000 BC.We must focussed on these games, in addition to the existing Sports like Weightlifting and Boxing." he added.

With long term vision, the Initiative is taking the support of Union Minister of Sports to revolutionise the movement for indigenous games in entire Northeast India, tapping rural athletes who are experts in indigenous games.

The Initiative has requested Shri Narendra Modi,Hon'ble Prime Minister of India to facilitate and reward the Commonwealth Games medalists soon. Meanwhile, MODIfied Northeast India also requested the players not to play the games for the sole purpose of getting government jobs. This has led to non performance and killing instinct of the players in the competition, once settlled with a post in some departments. Athletes must play to bring honour to the region and for the Nation. Sports is next to culture which is representing the Northeast India.

Lamenting on the involvement of politicians in sports as one of the factors of withering Sports in the Country and the region, Naorem Mohen have already requested the Prime Minister Office to end the regime of politics in Indian Sports, and banned the culture of appointing MPs, Ministers and MLAs in Indian Sports bodies or Olympic Associations.

Lastly, MODIfied Northeast India thanks the gesture of Manipur Chief Minister, Shri Okram Ibobi Singh for announcing to reward Commonwealth Games medalists, boosting moral supports of the athletes.
