Manipur Flood 2015 - Distribution of water filter units to flood affected families of Kakching Chumnang, Wangoo, Serou, Sugnu and Tentha

One month after worst ever flood in history of Manipur, many affected families continue to live either at relief camps or at temporary shelters as their respective houses are either fully collapsed or badly damaged or condition of the house is beyond living condition. Many families are expected to live in such harsh living conditions for months. In addition to food, other essential commodities such as mosquito net, candles, and medical supplies, acute shortage of drinking and potable water are another major concern for these families.

Under a good will project of Dynamic Manipur (DM) and Helping Hands Manipur (H2M) for the restoration of community ponds at several flood affected villages and distribution of water filtration units in an attempt to supply potable water to flood victims, on September 10 and 12, 2015; the team have distributed 50 water filtration units to each of the families of Kakching Chumnang (3), Wangoo (5), Serou (18), Sugnu (4) and Tentha (20) who are currently taking shelters at relief camps and temporary sheds.

At Serou relief camp, a lone water pump that serves 18 flood affected families of Serou presently taking shelters at Serou Makha Ningthem relief camp. Upon filtration of pump water through the water filter that DM/H2M provided, red color dirt was accumulated at the filter chalk - water taste before and after filtration was very different -- The most satisfactory reflection was seen to the eyes of relief dwellers. We felt that we have done a great job serving these families with clean drinking water.

DM/H2M volunteers have visited door to door and temporary shelters to shelters, in an attempt to locate and identify worst affected families in Sugnu and Tentha villages that has consumed several volunteering hours.

So far, 24 community ponds from different villages of Keirak, Kakching, Tekcham, Tentha, Leishangthem and Kangabok have been treated, which together would have water capacity more than 250 times of average pond size of 60X50X7 fts dimensions. A total of 100 water filters are distributed among the flood affected families of Komnao, Tekcham and Kakching Chumnang, Wangoo, Serou, Sugnu and Tentha who are presently at relief camps or temporary shelters. DM/H2M relief activities have also provided relief materials to over 800 families since August 7, 2015.

Pond treatment and water filter distribution was conducted under the good will project of “Potable Water Supply to Flood Victims through Pond Restoration and Filtration Units – Manipur Flood 2015" of DM and H2M with funds generously donated by Manipuri Diaspora such as San Francisco Bay Area Manipuri Community, Manipuri Association of Canada (MAC), Korea Manipuri Association (KMA) supported by Indians in Korea, North American Manipur Association (NAMA) and generous individuals from India and abroad. And the DM/H2M relief activities are also supported with financial assistance from generous individuals/groups/organizations from India and abroad.
