Imphal, July 16 2022:
After banning all counterfeit (cheap imitation) products of local handloom products, which flooded the local market, members of six student bodies - AMSU, AIMS, DESAM, KSA, MSF and SUK - confiscated such counterfeit products from different shops in Thangal Keithel on Saturday and warned the traders against selling such products in future.
Interacting with the media during the drive, AMSU vice-president Laishram Athouba said that these counterfeit products are flooding the local market as a cheap alternative to the local handloom products.
Such products manufactured in garment factories outside the state are posing serious threat to the local handloom products and weavers, who are depending on the profession for their livelihood, he said.
They asked the shop owners nof to sell such counterfeit products but to sell local handloom products as a way of promoting the local products and helping the weavers.
He also urged the government to take up necessary steps for promoting the local products.
