Truck driver electrocuted, helper hurt

A 27-year-old truck driver reportedly died of electrocution after his vehicle came into contact with a live wire while his helper sustained grievous injuries at a road construction site in Mailiang village under Phungyar sub-division in Kamjong district.
The deceased has been identified as VS Somipam, son of VS Ngachammi of Lamlang Gate village, and the injured as Yaruithan Chithung (30), son of Ngareipam Chithung of Kumram village.
According to a late report, the tragic incident occurred on August 1 at a site of the on-going PMGSYroad construction from Mailiang to Kumram village.
Driver Somipam and his helper Chithung were trying to unload stone chips from a tipper truck for use in the road construction when their vehicle came into contact with a live wire.
As the duo got electrocuted, Somipam was thrown down on the road and died on the spot, while Chithung got thrown into the roadside drain, the report said.
Chithung reportedly passed out for about 30 minutes.
When he regained consciousness, he went to check Somipam and found him already dead by then.
There were no other people around when the incident took place at around 1:30 pm and people came to know about the incident about one hour later, it said.
According to the report, the toes of the deceased driver were found to be badly burnt.
Chithung sustained burn injuries on various parts of the body including belly, wrist and hands and is currently undergoing treatment at RIMS hospital in Imphal.
