BJYM states stand on plantation drive

Imphal, May 22 2022: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), Manipur state unit president M Barish Sharma has stated that there is no enmity with any community in BJYM's tree plantation programme in deforested areas of the hills.

Addressing media persons at Thambal Sanglen here on Sunday, Barish said that BJYM state unit is conducting mass tree plantation programme in the hills particularly in deforested areas as part of its Green Mission under the theme 'Save environment, save youth, save future generation'.

As part of the programme, BJYM in coordination with forest department conducted mass tree plantation at Koubru hill on May 8 and the was successful with the support of local people.

Continuing tree plantation programme under Green Mission, BJYM volunteers went to Thangjing hill for another tree plantation drive on May 14.As BJYM volunteers were moving towards Thangjing hill, a large number of youths were found blocking the road at a village near Torbung.

BJYM volunteers did not confront the local youth but did tell the village chief about the tree plantation programme and the necessity to conduct such programmes in view of depletion of forest cover in the state.

While the conversation with village chief was going on, local youth shouted many slogans detrimental to sentiment of a particular community.

However, BJYM volunteers remained calm and did nothing to aggravate the situation.

Later, the village chief told him to plant only one sapling and return after leaving the remaining saplings to villagers, Barish recalled, adding that an uneasy calm prevailed at the village when local youth told the BJYM team to return without planting the saplings.

There was commotion and tension between the two sides but no physical conflict occurred at all and SPs of Churachandpur and Bishnupur districts coordinated in defusing the situation.

Barish Sharma further said that BJYM's tree plantation under Green Mission will be continued in different parts of the state and the organisation is ready to revisit areas where plantation programmes were conducted to ascertain whether the planted saplings are growing or not.
