Imphal, August 16 2015:
Remembering Pebam Chittaranjan, who had self-immolated in protest against the draconian law Armed Forces (Special Powers Act) (AFSPA) 1958, Manipur Students' Federation (MSF) on Sunday observed the 11th Students' Martyrdom Day at Takhellambam Leikai Youth Club Complex.
Security forces have "tortured and raped and killed many innocent people of the state under AFSPA violating human rights", alleged rights activists.
Chittaranjan revolted against the law and set himself on fire on August 15, 2004 and he later succumbed to his injuries on August 16 that year.
MSF, since then has been observing the day as Students' Martyrdom Day every year.
Retd Judge C Upendro, senior advocate Khaidem Mani, MSF president Kh Serajjudin and president of Takhellambam Leikai Youth Club S Sanaton attended the function as chief guest, guest of honour, president and special guest.
Apart from paying floral tribute to the photograph of late student martyr Pebam Chittaranjan, the participants also paid homage to late Sapam Robinhood, who sacrificed his life in demand of ILPS, and observed a two-minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
Urging the MLAs of the state to give priorities on state matters and law making activities by leaving aside distribution of rice and kerosene to local people, MSF advisor Kh Binimohon said that many people of Manipur have been fighting for the betterment of the state by sacrificing their lives.
Alleging that political parties need to take the major role in shaping the state in the right form, Khaidem Mani said that now young students have started taking the lead while sacrificing lives for their right, which was done by erstwhile leaders of the state in
the past.
Commenting on the recently signed peace accord between the Government of India and NSCN (IM), Retd Judge C Upendro said that there is need for contemplating on the accord even if it does not affect to territorial integrities of neighbouring states.
C Upendro also called people from all walks of life to be united together to ensure success of any mass movement for a particular objective.
