The state government has said that the heavy exchange of fire in Molnoi and Pallel area in Tengnoupal district was a gunfight between security forces and some armed miscreants.
A statement issued by police control room informed that the firefight erupted on Friday morning at Molnoi village near Pallel in Tengnoupal district between security forces and some armed miscreants, who attempted to resort to arson and violence in the village.
Following the incident, crowds of thousands of people attempted to move towards Pallel.
However, security forces jointly attempted to stop the mob to ensure peace and stability in Pallel, where situation has been tense for few days.
Being blocked by security forces, some armed miscreants from within the mob fired at security forces resulting in gunshot wound to an army officer, who was evacuated by helicopter to Military Hospital for treatment.
Three other police personnel were also injured during the crowd dispersal.
In a calibrated response in self defence and to control the unruly mob, security forces used minimum force to disperse the mob that led to injuries to few persons, who were part of the mob out of which two reportedly died.
It further stated that an 85 year-old civilian lady belonging to Kuki community was rescued by CSOs along with Manipur Police in Pallel area and handed safely to Tengnoupal district authorities.
On the other hand, search operations were conducted by security forces in the fringe and vulnerable areas of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kangpokpi and Churachandpur districts, in which four arms, four ammunition and one explosive were recovered from Imphal East and Churachandpur districts.
Movement of 450 vehicles along NH-37 with essential items have been ensured.
Strict security measures are taken up in all vulnerable locations and security convoy is provided in sensitive stretches in order to ensure free and safe movement of the vehicles.
A total of 128 checkpoints were installed in different districts, both in hills and valley, and police detained 977 persons in connection with violations.
The police statement also appealed to the general public not to believe in rumours and false videos, and also to confirm such materials with the rumour free number 9233522822 of Central Control room.
Further, the statement also appealed to public to return the looted arms, ammunition and explosives to police or nearest security forces immediately.
