Domestic Workers' Day observed

As celebrated in other parts of the world, the State observed the International Domestic Workers' Day by holding a rally from MDWMO's office to Chingmeirong Poumai Colony to increase awareness on the need to address the economic and psychological well being of domestic workers.
Organised by the Manipur Domestic Workers' Movement Organisation (MDWMO) the programme aims to reaffirm the fact that domestic work is also a work and not slavery and that these workers are like every other workers.
A social programme was also held at GM Hall wherein a three points charter of demand was submitted to the State Government.
The demands included inclusion of domestic workers under the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY), effective implementation of Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act, 2008 in the State and fixation of minimum wages for the domestic workers.
Speaking at the occasion Minister in-charge of Labour and Employment Irengbam Hemochandra said the trend of 'domestic work' is a recent happening.
In olden days people worked on fields and farms to earn wage.
The Minister assured that the charter of demands raised by MDWMO would be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting.
A domestic worker cannot be removed from work without notice.
A notice must be served beforehand, the Minister asserted.
He further assured that the workers would be given the Right to Protection soon.
Imphal West District SDC Asem Robertson, Manipur State Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna Executive Director Dr NS Gokulmani and Archbishop of Imphal Reverend Dominic Lumon also attended the observance programme.
