Imphal, May 22 2013 :
Apparently referring to Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh's comment at the national Anti-Terrorism Day observance yesterday that likened insurgency movement in Manipur to acts of terrorism, the armed United Revolutionary Front (URF), Manipur contended that ongoing armed campaign for restoration of Manipur's sovereignty cannot be compared to terrorist activities.
While it is understandable that the chief Minister will continue to make audacious comments as he needs patronage of the central Government to remain in power like in the past many years, it would be naive on his part to assume that right to self determination and acts of terrorism have no difference, said URF Information and Publicity secretary AK Pibarel.
Expressing that comments by those promoting India's interest and cause would not have much impact upon Manipuris who are tolerating various hardships but determined to live as free citizens, Pibarel said in Manipur acts of terrorism are being committed by kins and close relatives of Ministers and MLAs and security forces working under the Government.
Apart from kins of Minister(s) involved in thrashing or slaying of innocent civilians, there had been a number of cases wherein security force personnel indulged in outraging modesty of women and girls.
As a latest trend security forces are being utilised in smuggling banned drugs which also amount to terrorising the citizens, particularly the youths, maintained the URF secretary who also pointed out that Manipur becoming synonymous with fake killings is due to unrestrained power bestowed by the Government.
Compared to some youths exploited through the lure of money by given them contract works, insurgent members are drawn to peace talks or suspension of operation agreements with false promises only to be confined in security camps, Pibarel highlighted.
When family members or relatives of those who had joined the armed campaign are frequently targeted, abused and intimidated such ill-treatments too amount to acts of terrorism, he opined and exuded confidence that the masses cannot be wooed by tall claims and audacious remarks for the people's aspiration is to live as free citizens.
