Commission Holds Second Day Hearing On Alleged Extra-Judicial Killings

Five witnesses including one police personnel were cross examined today at Hotel Classic on the second day of hearing in six cases of alleged extrajudicial killings.
A personnel of 3rd IRB was cross examined by Counsel of the victims Mukul Sinha in the case pertaining to the alleged extrajudicial killing of Azad Khan who was killed on March 4, 2009 .
The hearing began at 9 am today and went on till 6.45 pm.
The Inquiry Commission set up by the Supreme Court is headed by Retired Justice N Santosh Hegde as the Chairman.
The members include former CEC JM Lyngdoh and Retired DGP of Karnataka, Ajay Kumar Singh.
Five witnesses gave their statement during the hearing today on alleged extrajudicial killings killings of Md Azad Khan (14) of Phoubakchao Makha Leikai on March 4, 2009; killing of A Gobind and Nobo of Bashikhong Mamang Leikai on April 4, 2009; Elangbam Kiranjit of Thoubal Haokha on April 24, 2009; Ch Umakanta of Iroishemba Mamang Leikai on May 5, 2009 .
Police Counsel, Advocate Dilip Kumar Das and AR Cousel PN Choudhury examined the four prosecution witnesses.
According to the statement of the police witness, based on information fed by Maj Balaba of AR, nine police commandos including himself along with troops of AR went to Phoubakchao Mamang Leikai to conduct an operation in the area on March 9, 2009.The details of the operation were planned at the office of the AR Major.
However, the police witness could neither give the number of AR personnel detailed in the operation nor could identify the personnel who shot Azad Khan.
He was allotted an AK-47 rifle on the day, the police witness stated while also admitting to have opened some rounds as blank fire.
Hearing of the police witness would be continued from 8.30 am tomorrow.
