Imphal, April 14:
The life of a patient admitted to RIMS Hospital here with 'complete heart block' has been saved, thanks to the generosity of a Pacemaker donor.
The lucky patient has been identified as H Thambalngou Singh (88) of Bishnupur Ward No.III.
He was admitted to RIMS on March 31 last and is currently recuperating in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Bed no.III of the Hospital.
According to Super Specialist Dr Ch Dhanaraj, the case of the patient was almost lost when he was brought to the hospital.
However, with implantation of an emergency pace maker, his life was saved.
Since the emergency pace maker is only for a few days, implantation of a permanent pace maker was required.
Unfortunately, as the family members of the patient were not in a position to meet the requirements for implantation of a permanent pace maker due to financial difficulties, the patient was waiting for his last moment on the bed of the hospital.
Luckily, in accordance to his last wish, a generous person who had been surviving with the help of a pacemaker donated his pacemaker and the H Thambalngou was given a new life.
The donated pacemaker was successfully implanted on Thambalngou by a team of doctors and staff including Super Specialist Dr Dhanaraj, Dr Ksh Birendra, PG students and related staff of Medicine Department and ICCU on April 12.The operation was conducted under the supervision of Professor Dr M Khulla.
With successful implantation of the pacemaker, Thambalngou would be able to live for more than 10 years, Dr Dhararaj said, while appealing to all the people who have implanted pacemakers to donate the same before they die to the ICCU of RIMS Hospital so that their generosity can save the lives of many other patients in need of pacemaker implant.
