Imphal, May 11 2009:
Green Bench of the Supreme Court has given environmental clearance for border fencing in the Moreh side of Indo-Myanmar boundary from pillar number 79 to pillar number 81 .
The Green Bench gave its consent for Environmental Clearance in response to an application submitted by Assam Rifles after the State Wildlife Board headed by the Chief Minister approved the border fencing proposal, informed an official source.
Environmental Clearance for the border fencing work was necessitated as the area falls under Yangoupokpi Wildlife Sanctuary.
Following the Supreme Court's approval, the State Advisory Group will be applying to the Ministry of Forest and Environment to issue necessary notification.
The fencing to be put up 10 feet towards Indian territory from the international boundary line has twin objectives first to check cross border movement of insurgents and second, to control trans-border smuggling.
However, the Govt of Myanmar has made emphatic demand to the Government of India not to go ahead with the border fencing work.
