DESAM hunger strikers freed

Even as 41 of its volunteers including 29 juveniles, who were detained at different jails and juvenile observation homes for staging indefinite hunger strike, have been released today, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has announced that their indefinite hunger strike would come to a close only after the last rites of Sapam Robinhood are per-formed tomorrow.
Soon after their release, the volunteers marched up to their Keishampat junction head office shouting slogans like 'Long live Manipur' and 'We want ILP' where they were warmly welcomed.
Of the 41 students, 19 students were released from Central jail, Sajiwa, seven girls from Central jail, Imphal, nine boys from Juvenile Observation Home, Pan- gei, two from Juvenile Observation Home, Khong-jom, nine girls from Juvenile Observation Home, Langthabal and nine boys from Juvenile Observation Home, Takyel-pat.
The released students further joined the indefinite hunger strike being carried on by six students at the gate of DESAM Keishampat junction head office.
DESAM launched its indefinite hunger strike at Kei- shampat on Aug 18 and Thoubal Wangma Devi Man-dop on Aug 19 .
DESAM secretary general P Premchandra said that the students' body would organise a reception function to welcome and honour the hunger strikers at DESAM head office at 1 pm tomorrow.
He also urged the families, friends and well wishers of these students to take part in the said function.
The six students, who are staging hunger strike, have been identified as Oinam Subhaschandra (27) s/o Mangi of Chana Mayai Leikai, Abujam Michael (19) s/o Imo of Shamurou Awang Leikai, Koijam Jiten (20) s/o Sanamatum of Khundrakpam Mayai Leikai, Phisubam Nazir Ahamad (17) s/o Nazirudin of Paobitek Mamang Leikai, Nilakanta Longjam (20) s/o Ibomcha of Nongpok Sekmai Mamang Leikai and Yumnam Naoba (24) s/o Ango of Khurai Sajor Leikai.
They began their stir from 7 pm of August 31 .
