Imphal, March 31 2021:
The Manipur People's Party (MPP) has appealed the Government to provide refuge to Myanmar Nationals who crossed the border amid the military crackdowns on pro-democracy protesters in the neighbouring country.
Speaking to media persons at its office, MPP president M Krishnadas said the party condemns the military regime and the attack against democracy.
He expressed solidarity with the people of Myanmar and said, considering the hardships Myanmar people are facing, the State should provide a shelter where they can stay when they seek refuge.
While providing the shelter, the State Government, at the same time, should devise a mechanism to check free movement of people into India.
Most importantly, those wounded in military actions should be provided the medical care needed.
The party is planning to open a camp at Moreh to assist the Myanmar people in the coming one or two days and necessary permission would be sought from the Deputy Commissioner concerned, Krishnadas said.
MPP working president L Amutombi, who was present in the press meet also said the relationship between Myanmar and Manipur is close and Myanmar Nationals who seek refuge should be helped and assisted in all possible ways on humanitarian ground.
"Even though we can't get involved politically in the country's affairs, those people who have crossed the border and those who are seeking refuge should be helped," Amutombi said.
On the other hand, the Government remaining silent on the death of MBBS student Sanaton Athokpam at RIMS has deepened the wounds of the public, he said.
The Government shouldn't remain silent.
It should take up all legal actions necessary to investigate and find out the truth behind the death, he added.
It may be noted that Sanaton, a 5th Semester MBBS student, was found dead with both hands tied behind inside his room at RIMS hostel on March 15 .
