New Delhi, June 29 2011:
Delhi civil society groups held a demonstration at Assam Bhawan today over the arrest of RTI activist and General Secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) Akhil Gogoi.
The protest demanded the release of Akhil Gogoi and a memorandum was forwarded to the Chief Minister of Assam.
RTI activist and member of Lok Pal Bill drafting committee Arvind Kejriwal also joined the protest.
The memorandum was received by the State Bhawan officials.
Speaking to the media later, Arvind said that Akhil's protest over the eviction drive was a peaceful protest.
The right to protest is enshrined in the Constitution of India.
On the allegation by the Assam Government that Akhil Gogoi had links with ULFA and followed the Maoist ideology Arvind Kejriwal maintained that the Govt should come out with proof of such arbitrary allegation.
He stated that the Government never listen to people's voices and people have no options but protest.
If such harassment and police atrocities on peaceful protest continue "many more Akhil will be borm": said Kejriwal .
