Imphal, February 19 2013:
Cases pertaining to seizure of huge consignments of contraband drugs worth crores of rupees from different places in the State including Airport and Post Office would be handed over to CBI.
This was decided during a Cabinet meeting held today.
Speaking to reporters today, Deputy CM Gaikhangam, who is also in-charge of Home ruled out the possiblity of the involvement of only ordinary people in the drug smuggling racket.
He also speculated the involvement of people from outside the State in the business deals that involve crores of rupees while adding that the Government has viewed the matter seriously.
As such, the Cabinet adopted a decision to hand over the cases to a neutral agency, CBI, for an independent probe, the Dy CM said.
Gaikhangam exuded confidence that the CBI would probe the cases without any partiality and maintain transparency.

Handing the cases over to the CBI does not mean that the Government would remain silent on the matter, Gaikhangam said while urging the people to remain alert and vigilant.
Pointing out that the State Government is viewing the matter seriously, Gaikhangam said that the State Government would also write to the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister on the matter.
Saying that the drugs business could have been taken out long time back, the Dy CM said the recent seizure of the contraband drugs only shows that the police and intelligence units are working sincerely and with extra-alertness.
Meanwhile, Gaikhangam also assured that the pending results of ASI recruitment in the police dept would be declared within first week of March.
He further urged candidates of the ongoing recruitment for police constable not to grease any palm.
