Imphal, March 12 2023:
At least six student organisations of Manipur have appealed to the State Government to identify the 'infiltrators' settling in Manipur and take up actions against them.
The student organisations are MSF, DESAM, KSA, SUK, AIMS and another organisation.
In a joint statement, the student organisations said that there already is a public movement in Manipur over the alleged threat being posed by unlawful entry of non-locals from other States and neighbouring countries.
They also said that immediate action from the Government is needed to check unnatural growth of population in hill districts, establishment of new villages, widespread cultivation of poppy plants, encroachment on reserved forest areas etc.
Claiming that non locals have been threatening the identity, culture, economy and ecosystem of Manipur since the past many years, the joint statement further appealed to the Government to detect and deport the illegal immigrants living in Manipur.
They also appealed to the Government to persuade the Centre to implement the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur as soon as possible.
Further appealing to the Government to evict the illegal structures constructed in Reserved Forest areas which measure only about 1467 square kilometers, the student organisations maintained that saving the environment must be the responsibility of all and 'no groups must give communal colour to it' .
"Unnatural growth of population in hill districts not covered by MLR & LR Act is a testimony of outsiders from Myanmar settling and setting up villages in hill districts," they claimed and added that such growth of population poses grave threat to the indigenous communities.
The student organisations went on to appeal to the Government to establish a Population Commission, implement NRC in Manipur, evict those settling in Reserved and Protected Forest areas and give more power to Forest guards.
