Imphal, March 24 2023:
A man who wielded an axe and threatened to kill everyone has been shot dead at Changangei Uchekon, Imphal West under Lamphel police station at around 8.30 am today.
The deceased identified as Govind Basu Matary (35) s/o Budang basu Matary from Assam was working as a labourer under the ABCI Infrastructure Private Limited.
He was engaged in the construction work of Imphal-Kangchup road.
Govind came to the house of Laishram Romeo (50) s/o Thoiba this morning.
On being enquired about the purpose of his visit, Govind tried to assault everyone who spoke to him.
Some people of the neighbourhood somehow coaxed and pacified Govind and saw him off at Romeo's gate and they came back.
However, Govind came back shortly after and took up an axe which was kept just outside the house.
A tense standoff ensued between Govind and Romeo when the former threatened to hack everyone.
As Govind became even more furious, Romeo's younger brother Laishram Basanta shot Govind with a double-barrel gun.
Govind was hit on the back.
Romeo too sustained injuries on the right thigh.
While Govind succumbed to the injuries on the spot, Romeo was taken to Raj Medicity.
After a team of Forensic Science examined the spot of the incident, police took the corpse to RIMS morgue for post mortem.
Meanwhile, police have arrested Laishram Basanta and a case has been registered at Lamphel police station.
