Rise in Barak water level cuts off 44 Poumai villages

At least 44 Poumai villages in Senapati district remained cut off since June 12 as the water level of Barak river increases due seasonal rainfall.
The alternate route passing through the Barak river at Koide Biisho has been totally cut off since June 12.Of the 44 affected Poumai villages six are in Koide, three in Pural, six Oinam, six Poumai, 10 Khong-dei Circle, three Phaibung, five Thingba and four Paomata in areas.
When this correspondent visited Koide Biisho, travellers were seen crossing the river with their belongings on foot to the other side of the river.
Several vehicles were also parked on the other side of the river.
Columns for the bailey bridge at the spot are under construction but construction materials to be brought from outside are yet to reach the work site.
Earlier, local MLA Kumo Sha personally visited the spot and appealed for swift construction of the bridge before the onset of monsoon.
A team from the works department led by the chief engineer had also inspected the spot on April 11 and had assured completion of bridge project before the monsoons.
When enquired, the Maram-Phaibung Road Development Association lamented non-completion of the bridge.
The association also sought attention of the authority concerned to look into the problems being faced by the common people of the region at the earliest.
