Ukhrul, May 08 2021:
Amidst rising cases in Covid-19 second wave, Ukhrul district on Friday recorded its first casualty after a 58-year-old female patient succumbed to the virus at Shija Hospitals in Imphal.
Wondhar, wife of Jeremiah Shangh of Sirarakhong village, passed away at the private hospital at 10:39 am on Friday.
She was reportedly the first patient from the district to succumb to the disease in the current second wave.
The district magistrate has granted permission for conducting final rites of the deceased at her native place in strict compliance of Covid-19 protocols.
Sources said the deceased's husband Jeremiah who has also been infected with the disease, is in a critical condition at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, with the detection of another 11 fresh cases, the tally of active cases in the district has reached 84 till Saturday, according to DSO.
In view of the rapid surge in the cases, the authority of Ukhrul District Hospital (UDH) has come up with an arrangement to increase the intake capacity of the hospital.
According to MS UDH Dr Raikhan, an additional number of 20 beds have been created and added by diverting the materials and resources from other departments of the hospital.
He said that the new arrangement has
been done to accommodate the ever increasing number of symptomatic patients taken in the COVID Isolation Ward of the hospital.
Now, with this addition, the total number of beds available at COVID Isolation Ward of hospital is 28.He also said that the entire 3rd floor of the hospital main building has also been converted into a COVID Block which would become an out of bound area for anyone except for the staff deployed for COVID duties in the said block.
"This is the maximum beds that can be created without affecting the services of other departments," Raikhan said, adding that creation of more beds beyond this would lead to mixing up and encroachment on the route of access with the other departments of the hospital.
"In that case, other services of the hospital could be disrupted.
So we are using the additional beds rationally and judiciously for our maximum benefits," he added.
