Imphal, June 25 2009:
The United Naga Council has joined the protest against the decision of the State Government to deploy police commandos and IRB personnel in the hill districts.
Making its stand known, the UNC today submitted a memorandum to the Governor urging him to intervene and advise the State Government to review its decision.
The memorandum termed the decision of the Government as a 'deliberated move to disturb and sabotage the Indo-Naga ceasefire and the subsequent peace process in the region.' It further said that the valley area, where the commandos and IRB are deployed, has been witnessing extra-judicial killings, arbitrary detention, torture and inhuman treatments under the pretext of counter-insurgency operations.
Copies of the memorandum have also been faxed to the Prime Minister, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Home Minister P Chidambaram.
The People's Democratic Alliance has said that the State's decision is unwise and uncalled for.
In a statement, PDA general secretary Gaidon Kamei warned that they may resort to appropriate movements if the Government fails to review the decision.
A number of hill based organisations including the Naga People's Movement for Human Rights, Churachandpur District Students' Union, All Naga Students' Association, Manipur and a host of Tangkhul civil society organisations, have all voiced their opposition to the move to deploy police commandos and IRB men in the hill districts.
