Recounting the incident, Basanta's wife Thadoi Leima said that around 8.30am Friday, an unknown non-Manipuri man, who could not speak the local language, came to their residence.
On enquiring the purpose of his visit and whether he wanted to use the toilet, the man refused to respond and instead, turned on the enquiring person and attempted to assault.
As such, the non-Manipiuri was chased out of the residence.
Shortly after, the man returned, picked up an axe kept nearby for chopping wood and started chasing the occupants of the house with the weapon.

With the safety of his family threatened, Thadoi's husband, Basanta took out his licensed double barrel gun and shot the non-Manipuri, killing him instantly.
Prior to the shooting, the man was chasing his (Basanta) brother Romeo and as such, the pellets from the gun hit Romeo's leg.
Thadoi continued that the police were promptly informed of the incident and a team arrived, who picked up the body.
The team also arrested her husband with his licensed gun along with the axe, which the deceased used to terrorise the family members.
She contended that her husband was merely defending against the life attempt on his family.
