Imphal, July 21 2023:
Maintaining that the strategy of the state government to provide security cover to farmers for taking up agricultural activities would be futile, Yumnam Patlou clubs, organisations and meira paibi associations pointed out that farming activities would be possible only when the bunkers of armed Kuki militants set up in hills nearby the paddy fields are destroyed.
Speaking in a sit-in protest organised jointly by Yumnam Patlou Village Development Committee, Morning Star Club and United Women Voluntary Association, Yumnam Patlou demanding immediate solution to the restive situation in the state, Morning Star Club advisor BK Nandeibam cautioned that failure to end the crisis at the earliest could lead to outbreak of more unwanted incidents.
Therefore, the government should come up with strategies to bring an end to the ethnic violence but without any compromise on Manipur's emotional and territorial integrity.
He further stated that the hillocks close to paddy fields are occupied by the armed Kuki militants and bunkers constructed at strategic locations.
Unless these bunkers are destroyed, there can be no security to the farmers who are ready to start farming activities.
Though the government has informed that security personnel will be deployed for protection of the farmers, no security personnel could be visible in the area, he claimed.
The protestors used placards inscribed with slogans/words "War cannot bring peace", "Don't play divide and rule policy in Manipur", "rein in armed Kuki militants under SoO", "Flush out narco-terrorists" and "No to separate administration in Manipur" .
