Editors' Guild, AMWJU condemn assault on scribes

Editors' Guild, Manipur and All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) have strongly condemned the act of assaulting Bureau Chief of Impact TV Noren Ningombam and his cameraperson K Bipin Sharma by the personnel of 9 Assam Rifles (AR) in Moreh Town on Thursday night.
In an emergency meeting convened here on Friday, the Editors' Guild demanded the responsible authorities to transfer the erring AR officer and resolved to boycott all AR related news till the matter is settled.
The Editors' Guild also affirmed its call to boycott the State Government and all MLAs of the ruling party from February 21 onwards if the Government fails to act upon the demand for safety and freedom of media persons in the state.
According to a statement of AMWJU, Noren Ningombam and Bipin Sharma of Impact TV were allegedly assaulted by the AR personnel led by one CO Col Anandi Antare at the international border town of Moreh while they were covering a mob attack at the office of SDPO, Moreh.
The Standing Committee of AMWJU further resolved to boycott all Assam Rifles related news until fitting disciplinary action is initiated against the CO and his escort party.
Meanwhile, Editors' Guild and AMWJU on Friday submitted separate memorandums to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh demanding strict action against the Assam Rifles personnel who assaulted the scribes.
