Covid toll hits 10 in Ukhrul, Kamjong two

Death toll due to Covid-19 in Ukhrul district jumped to 10 on Wednesday after one person died at Shirui village, while Kamjong district reported its second Covid-19 fatality with the death of another patient at JNIMS in Imphal on the same day.
Sources said that 40-year-old Thotreitha Hungray, a resident of Shirui village, breathed his last in his village, hours after developing Covid-like symptoms including fever, cough and loose motion.
With this, the district's death toll has reached 10 in the second wave of the Covid pandemic.
Another seven fresh positive cases have been reported in the district on Wednesday tallying to 115 of active cases at present.
According to the sources, Thotreitha had been keeping well and suddenly developed the symptoms only on Wednesday morning.
It is learnt that he died within hours of showing the symptoms even as his family was about to take him to the hospital.
Suspecting Covid due to the presence of symptoms, Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) was performed on the body and the result came out positive, the sources said.
Subsequently, the district magistrate of Ukhrul declared the deceased's house as a containment zone with immediate effect in an order issued in the evening.
The order also advised all persons who had come into contact with the deceased to go for stringent isolation and to report to the medical department for necessary actions.
On the same day, a well-known intellectual and an assistant professor at LMS Law College, Imphal Dr Vareso Ningshen, succumbed to the infectious disease around 4.30 pm at JNIMS, Imphal on Wednesday, days after battling the malaise.
The deceased hailed from Nambashi Khullen in Kamjong district but was residing in Imphal.
This marks the second death due to Covid-19 in the district, the first victim being Phakhami Shanglai from Chakhama village who passed away at RIMS, Imphal on May 10 last.
Meanwhile, many have condoled the sudden passing of Dr Vareso Ningshen, terming his demise as a collosal loss for the Tangkhul community.
Many recalled him as a humble human being, an intellectual and an unsung hero of the Nagas.
