Workshop on food quality and safety management held

A workshop on 'Food Quality and Safety Management for Export of Food Products from North East Region (NER)' was held today at College of Agriculture, CAU.
The workshop jointly was organised by Central Agricultural University (CAU), Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT).
Thanjavur and Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).
Speaking at the workshop, Prof Indira Sarangthem, dean.
College of Agriculture, said they were really concerned about the quality and safety of the processed foods, particularly in the North East region.
Package spices, spices powder, processed agricultural products and other related consumable goods are being produced in large scale this day due to increasing demand and advancement in science and technology and it is only prudent that we take cognizance of the safety and quality of such food products and we should also be concerned about it, she added.
Prof Indira Sarangthem added that she was confident that the workshop will bring about an awareness to all the participants on how to maintain quality in processed food.
Dr Goutam Das from Indian Institute of Food Processing Technology (IIFPT) regional centre Guwahati, said as the Government cannot provide jobs to everybody, entrepreneurs in the state play an important role by providing employment opportunities as well as service to the state.
He said the entrepreneurs are very important in the Agricultural sector as they provide an opportunity and a point for sale of their agricultural products and they convert them into processed foods in one form of the other and so we should all encourage new entrepreneurs.
Entrepreneurs and farmers should forge a good relationship to ensure that the unique food items including black rice, pineapple, ginger, passion fruits, turmeric etc, are processed and exported to generate a good source of income, he added.

CAU said the upcoming entrepreneurs should analyse the wants of the people, process to maintain quality and how to process them in an economical way.

APEDA; KS Guite, NABARD; Dr K Rishikanta Singh, ICAR; Dr H Dayanidhi Singh and Dr Sandeep Jaghu presented their expert opinions on different topics at the programme.
