Imphal, November 18 2013:
In a bizarre incident occurred here today, a lady who was supposed to undergo an operation at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) was injured when a part of the ceiling of the room where she was staying crumbled all of a sudden.
The unlucky lady has been identified as Ningthoujam Ophelia (48), w/o Ningthoujam Jasobanta of Sagolband Sayang Khwai Ningthou Leirak.
She was admitted to the newly opened Special Ward of RIMS Hospital for an operation to remove her uterus (womb) .
The incident happened in the early morning at the Special Deluxe Room No.7 while Ophelia was sitting on her bed.
She sustained injuries near her eyebrow, arm and leg.
To take stock of the incident, a team of United Committee Manipur (UCM) led by its General Secretary Joychandra Konthoujam, Vice-President Chandramani Khumancha and IPR Secretary Ng Deva visited the injured lady and her family members at RIMS Hospital.
The UCM leaders condemned the incident as fallout of the failed administration and corrupt practices of the RIMS authorities.
They said that RIMS Director Prof Sekharjit's wife Dr Dayamenti came to inquire about the incident and locked up the room leaving aside the Director.
She even prevented media persons from entering the room.
The Special Ward was recently opened after getting renovated for a huge amount.
The collapse of ceiling shows that the poor quality of construction works.
The RIMS authorities are actively involved in corruption rather than trying to improve the healthcare facilities, the UCM leaders averred.
It may be noted that the RIMS has been planned to be elevated to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
It has also been a leading medical college in the northeast.
