Lack of quality control, say UCM, PANDM

Imphal, November 18 2013: Coming out strongly against the break down of the ceiling in a room at the Special Ward of RIMS today, the United Committee, Manipur and PANDM today asserted that it was a clear reflection that no quality control was maintained when the structure was built.

Speaking to newsmen at its office today, UCM vice president Chandramani Khumancha said that the patient, Ningthoujam ongbi Ophelia (48) wife of Jasho-banta was lying in bed awai- ting a surgical operation, when a portion of the ceiling gave way and fell on her this morning.

Ophelia had earlier gone to the bathroom to brush her teeth and freshen up but as there was no water, she was lying on the bed, said the UCM leader.

Contractors should not only go after profits but also work under certain ethics and guidelines, opined Chandramani and informed that a team of UCM members visited the ward to take stock of the situation today.

Ophelia however underwent the operation after the incident.

Chandramani said that the room where the portions of the ceiling caved in was found kept under lock and they were not allowed not click photos.

Stating that the UCM will now henceforth keep a watch over the hospital, Chandramani said that of the two operation theatres there, only one is functional at the moment.

The other one has not been used for the last one year.

On further inquiry it has also come to light that out of the eight beds inside the functional OT, only are being used as some of the machinery installed there have gone out of order, claimed Chandramani and urged RIMS authority to set things right and make the other OT on the first floor functional as soon as possible.

Pointing out other shortfalls within the hospital, the UCM vice president said that there is no light in front of the OT.

PANDM president Yumnamcha Dilipkumar said responsibilities should be fixed for the ceiling caving in inside a room at the special ward of RIMS.

Recalling that the special ward was opened after renovation on November 15 this year, Dilipkumar said that the Director of the institute should explain how such an incident occurred.

Sounding a stern warning, Dilipkumar said that the true state of the hospital would be highlighted to the Prime Minister, Union Health Minister, Union Finance Minister and vice president of the AICC, Rahul Gandhi.
