Poppy plantations destroyed in Chandel

Imphal, March 04 2013:
A combined team of Narcotics and Affairs of Border (NAB), 32 Assam Rifles under 28 Sector and Chandel police destroyed illegal Poppy cultivation at different locations in border area of Joupi Circle under Chandel district from February 8 to March 2 .
The combined team destroyed in all 146 acres of illegal Poppy cultivation in and around Tupuching village (30 acres), Joumal village (35 acres), Hollengjang village (20 acres), Mombi village (15 acres) and Shaluk village (6 acres) under Chakpikarong Police Station.
The illegal cultivations were being carried out along the foothills and slopes of the hillocks as well as along the river banks.
According to a statement issued by SP of NAB, the illegal poppy plants destroyed during the drive would be around 1460 kgs valued at Rs 5.84 crore in black market in India.
Different FIR cases have also been taken up against the unknown accused persons for further investigations in this regard, the release added.
The combined team also reportedly organised a meeting with the villagers of the surrounding villages and sensitized them that illegal cultivation of poppy is punishable under the law and made them aware of the multifaceted ill-effects of poppy to human race.
They also advised the villagers to stop cultivating of poppy plants and grow other sustainable crops in future to uplift their socio-economic condition.
