Family of 3 mentally challenged siblings seeks help

Senapati, December 02 2018: The Senapati Disabled People's Association, Manipur (SDPAM) and a mother of three mentally challenged children sought the attention of the Govt as well as the good Samaritan to extend all possible help on humanitarian ground to mitigate the grievances of the family.

Matia (51) w/o (L) Besii of Mao Taphou is a mother of 6 children, out of which, the middle two sisters and one brother were declared or certified as mentally retarded by the State Medical Board and Disability Certificate has been issued under the Medical & Health Services, Govt of Manipur in 2005 initiated by MANEDA.

The degree of mental issue of the three siblings were recorded as 60%, 52% and 60% respectively.

However, the two elder and the last sons among the 6 children are stated to be normal.

The three mentally retarded were reportedly kept at an Orphanage Home at Kanglatongbi for the past four/five years.

The mother of the ill fated family said that her three normal sons studied somehow up to Junior High School but dropped out due to financial constraint when their father died due to some illness in 2010 .

The father reportedly worked as a Linesman (Technical Jugali) under PHED, Senapati when he was alive on contract basis.

However, the father reportedly died before he could get permanent post in the said department.

When she approached the concerned department to get her eldest son to the post, no appointment could be made, the mother added.

At present, the mother with her children is running a small grocery shop in front of District & Session Court, Senapati to look after the family and any aid from Govt had reached the ill fated family so far.

The Senapati Disabled People's Association, Manipur (SDPAM) which was reportedly formed in 2007 have distributed different aids and appliances to the differently abled persons of the district including wheelchairs, crutch, hearing aids, walking sticks, artificial limbs, etc and even through the initiative of the Social Welfare department, Senapati.

However, no Govt aid has reached the ill fated three siblings till date that match their disability, reported Th Johnson Kaikho, advisor to SDPAM.

Earlier, the association had also organized different types of awareness campaign at different places of the district even up to village level, but the three siblings could not attend any of such programmes as their conditions are different even though they are also members of the SDPAM.

In view of the challeged faced by the family, advisor to SDPAM and the mother of the family appealed the concerned authority of the district and the State Govt to look into their grievances and extend all possible help on humanitarian ground.
