Laikhuram Rojit, one of the four accused in the rape of a tribal woman U-morok seller from Khoupum Tampak on the night of March 22 at Keinou in Bishnupur district, reportedly attempted to commit suicide inside the Sajiwa Jail where he is presently lodged.
According to a reliable source, the suicide attempt took place at around 11 pm yesterday inside the prison cell of Sajiwa Central Jail.
Laikhuram Rojit attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a sharp object which he made out of the LED light provided by jail authorities to the inmates.
The other jail inmates who were with Rojit in the same prison cell immediately informed the jail authorities and Rojit was rushed to JNIMS, Porompat for medical treatment.
The doctors in the hospital discharged him at around midnight after confirming that the wound was not serious enough.
The doctors had done only a single stitch over the wound, the source said.
Before Rojit was discharged from JNIMS, the jail authorities informed the Heingang Police about the incident, who came and took the statement of Rojit.
Later, the Heingang police registered a case against him for attempted suicide.
The police are still clueless as to why Rojit attempted to commit suicide inside the jail.
However, as the wound received by Rohit was minor, the jail authorities suspected that it might be a trick to get himself bail out.
The family members of Rojit had earlier applied for bail in the court on medical ground.
But the court denied bail.
The SP of Sajiwa jail had also flayed the accusation of his counsel of not providing enough medical attention to Rojit.
The Jail SP had clarified on the allegation of Rojit's mother that her son had been denied of all treatment onside the jail, by asserting the jail authority had even taken Rojit to Babina Diagnostic Centre to diagnose his ailment.
It may be noted here that along with Rojit, the other three accused rapists namely Chungkham Ibomcha of Thongju Boroi Makhong, Salam Bijen Singh of Uripok and Kshetrimayum Kennedy of Kongpal Chanam Leikai were arrested and lodged in Sajiwa Jail after Bishnupur police framed charge-sheet against them.
Among the four, ChIbomcha and Ksh Kennedy are said to be IRB personnel..
The charge hearing against the four accused is pending in the court.
