Thoubal, March 31 2018:
The All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) Thoubal district committee has expressed disappointment at the State Government for excluding the sole women only college of Thoubal district, Waikhom Mani Girls' College, in the conversion of six Government aided colleges into full-fledged Government colleges under Higher and Technical Education Department, Government of Manipur.
A press release issued by the information and publicity secretary of the committee today stated that the college , established in 1980, has operated as a college with one of the highest number of students in the State and it has also produced many successful women students.
The students union further apprised that the college has a total strength of 2227 students and is manned by 18 different departments with 80 teaching staff and 33 non-teaching staff.
Waikhom Mani Girls College suits every criteria for becoming a full fledged Govt college and the infrastructure and staff are in a good shape as well, the students union asserted.
AMSU Thoubal district questioned as to why the Government left out the college from being converted into a full-fledged Government College, despite numerous visits and inspections by the Education Minister in the past.
The union further alleged the motive of the State Government as political-based and termed the exclusion as unfortunate.
AMSU Thoubal district urged the State Government and the authorities concerned to exclude education and other related matters, from the political domain.
The union claimed that some of the colleges (which were included in the list of conversion) have not even been assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
It further stated that recent move of excluding the college has proved that the Government has not appreciated and welcomed the Prime Minister Narrendra Modi's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" project, in the State.
Meanwhile, many students are demanding the conversion of the Assam Women's University into a full fledged varsity in Assam, which has high possibility of turning into a reality.
The failure of including the sole Women's College in the list of Governments College is unfortunate and will only hamper the process of development, it added.
The AMSU Thoubal district committee has strongly urged the State Govt to covert Waikhom Mani Girls' College into a full fledged college immediately.
The union, along with students of the college are set to launch stringent forms of agitations if the State Government continues to turn a deaf ear to the demand of the union, it warned.
It may be mentioned that the six colleges were converted into a full-fledged Govt College were Biramangol College, Sawombung, Mayai Lambi College, Yumnam Huidrom, Kakching Khunou College, Kakching Khunou, Liberal College, Luwangshangbam, Thambal Marik College, Oinam and Standard College, Kongba.
