Radheshyam mulls fund for research, development of State

Imphal, January 02 2018: Stating that research should be done to address expectations and solutions to the problems and challenges confronting the State, Education Minister Thokchom Radheshyam assured that he would put in earnest efforts to avail fund for research and development of the State.

He was addressing a felicitation function organised by the Manipur Association for the Promotion of Science (MAPS) and Research Institute of Science And Technology (RIST) held at the Court Hall, Manipur University yesterday.

Speaking as chief guest, Radheshyam called upon the people especially intellectuals to put mind together to ease the vast array of problems in the society.

He pointed out that research in the North East region is lagging behind as compared to other States of the country.

Research should be encouraged specially on applied science considering its importance.

One should not do research just for obtaining a degree, he added.

He announced that the Government is planning to set up ASEAN University in the State to promote quality education.

The Minister also assured that the Government will extend all possible help to facilitate research in the State.

He acknowledged eminent scientists of the State for their immense contributions in the field of research and development of the State.

The Minister felicitated Prof Ng Brajachand Singh who was awarded with Veteran Scientist of Manipur � 2018 in recognition of his contribution in the field of HIV detection, surveillance and monitoring the disease.

He also felicitated Manipuri � American, Prof A Surjalal Sharma, Director of Research Institute of Science and Technology RIST for his selection in the prestigious Fellow of the American Society (APS), USA.

Presiding over the function, Prof Adya Prasad Pandey, Vice-Chancellor, MU stated that science may be the product of human brains but it is also driven by the compassion of human hearts, the desire to make human life better.

He further stated that there is a need to develop and exploit latest technologies in the service and manufacturing sectors.

He appealed to all the departments of MU to be ready to take responsibility for making the 105th Indian Science Congress a grand success.

Prof Moirangthem Premjit Singh, Vice-Chancellor, Central Agricultural University, Iroisemba; Prof N Rajmuhon Singh, president of MAPS and Dean of Mathematical and Physical Sciences; Professors, research scholars and non�teaching staff of the university also attended the function.
