Kpi local bodies enforce 'Ban on Plastic bag' at Kpi DHQs

Drive to enforce ban of plastic bag in Kangpokpi town spearheaded by local bodies of Kangpokpi District Headquarters began on a determined note here today with the collection of fines from various offenders on the very second day following the instruction of Kangpokpi Town Committee directed by District Administration Kangpokpi and ADC Sadar Hills.
As per the directive of District Administration Kangpokpi and ADC Sadar Hills following the Manipur High Court order in connection with the ban of plastic bag in the State on May 21, Kangpokpi Town Committee (KTC) had earlier informed the people of Kangpokpi especially business establishments, women vegetables vendors and local shops to stop using plastic bag less than 50 micron in the town.
It also said that Kangpokpi Town Committee (KTC) along with Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organization (KWWO) and Kanggui Youth Union (KYU) have been strictly enforcing and monitoring the order of plastic ban from September 10 and a fine of Rs 500 was imposed to anyone flouting the order of KTC.
On September 21, Kanggui Youth Union (KYU) while checking all the business establishments in Kangpokpi DHQs found out that many people were confused over using plastic bag less than 50 micron and therefore decided to ban all kinds of plastic bag whether less than 50 micron or above so that it should not create any confusion among the people, report our correspondent.
Many women vegetable vendors and business establishment were let go without imposing any fine on September 21 and were asked to stop using any types of plastic bags by members of KYU and KWWO.
However, while checking for second time on September 24 members of KYU and KWWO found and seized huge quantity of plastic bags from various business establishments and also imposed fines as per the instruction of KTC, it added.
Some business establishments were even asked to buy dustbin instead of paying fines to comply with the instruction of KTC which also required keeping dustbin in their respective shop.
Speaking to media persons, Kamgougin Lunkim, General Secretary, Kanggui Youth Union said that the seized plastic bags were handed over to Sadar Hills Autonomous District Council, Kangpokpi for further necessary action.
He further said that the local bodies including KWWO and KYU under the aegis of KTC will continue to strictly check and monitor the ban on plastic bags in the days to come while it will also enforce compulsory use of proper dustbin and not cartoon box as dustbin to control littering of waste items in the town and to shunt unhygienic way of living.
The local bodies also appealed the people of Kangpokpi especially shopkeepers, vegetables vendors, meat sellers to strictly follow the instruction of KTC on plastic ban and use of proper dustbin in future and extend maximum cooperation and support towards the movement.
