Imphal, February 06, 2012:
Mamikon Academy, Imphal and EX-Theatre Asia, Taiwan would be jointly organizing a workshop on 'Psycho-physical aspects of acting' from February 13 to 19 at Kee Pee Studio, Kwakeithel.
Announcing this at a press conference here today, Artistic Director of EX-Theatre Asia, Taiwan Chongtham Jayanta Meetei observed that there is generally a gap between the body movement and mental set up of the artistes in Manipuri theatre.
Even though Manipur has rich tradition of performing art and culture, there is the problem of understanding them by others do not speak or understand Manipuri since the performances are mostly bereft of body language.
To be an artiste, one has to dissociate himself/herself from their normal day to day life and get into the skin of the character they are playing.
However, in Manipur, one who can deliver dialogue perfectly is considered to be a good artiste.
As a result, acting in true sense of the term where the body could convey what is being conceived in the mind is missing in most dramas and films in Manipur, Jayanta maintained.
Jayanta, who graduated from National School of Drama, New Delhi and co-founded the EX-Theatre Asia, informed that the total intake of the 10-day long workshop would not be more than 20. "I would consider the workshop a success if the participants could share the knowledge gained with the rest and help in giving a new direction to the theatrical movement in Manipur", Jayanta added.
Executive Director of EX-Theatre Asia Lin Pei Ann, who was also present during the press conference, observed that the beauty of any culture is enhanced through exposure and consequent mutual understanding of each other's culture.
Similarly, Manipuri culture, howsoever beautiful it may be, could never be considered, without exposure to the rest of the world.
Participants should come to the workshop with an open mind to whatever is there to learn.
Coming with predetermined mindset would defeat the very purpose of organizing the workshop, she added.
