Raising strong resentment over the killing of a Pharmacist working at Wangoi Primary Health Centre, locals of Yumnam Huidrom today took out a protest rally blocking Mayai Lambi at Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar today.
Huidrom Jotin of Yumnam Huidrom Mayai Leikai, who also runs a chemist shop at Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar was shot dead by two unidentified gunmen last night.
He was returning home from his chemist shop with his three friends.
Jotin was stopped by the two gunmen on the pretext of talking over some matter and suddenly opened fire on him.
With the news of the killing spreading at Jotin's locality this morning, irate locals gathered at Thiyam Leishangkhong community hall and took out a protest rally.
The rallyists held placards that read as 'What is Jotin's fault?', 'We condemn killing of innocent people', 'Book the culprits', 'Save lives of common people', 'We are against gun culture', 'We do not want violence', 'Stop insurgency of killing innocent people' etc.
The rally passed through localities like Thiyam Leishangkhong, Wangoi Mutum Phibou, Top Siphai, Paobitek, Yumnam Huidrom and returned to Thongkhong Laxmi bazar, where a public meeting was held.
Vehicular traffic movement along Mayai Lambi was diverted to another route from Thongkhong Laxmi Bazar during the rally and public meeting.
After constituting a Joint Action Committee against the killing, the meeting resolved to launch various forms of agitation apart from not claiming the dead body if the Government fails to book the culprits within 48 hours.
The meeting also demanded for suitable Government job to one of the kins of the deceased and compensation of Rs 10 lakhs before Shradha ceremony of Jotin.
A memorandum highlighting these resolutions and demands was later submitted to the Chief Minister.
