A day-long awareness programme on 'financial inclusion plan of government of India' was held at Lainingthou Lai Moriba community hall in Imphal East district today.
Organised jointly by Manipur Rural Bank, Kongba Branch and People's Development Society, Business Correspondent of Manipur Rural Bank, the awareness programme was attended by General Manager of NABARD, RO Manipur SV Nemlekar as Chief Guest, Chairman of Manipur Rural Bank Monolith Deb as President and Branch Manager of Manipur Rural Bank (Kongba Branch) B Bimol Singh, Pradhan of Uchekon Nongchup Gram Panchayat W Birilal Singh and Pradhan of Thambalkhong Gram Panchayat K Olen Singh as Guests of Honour.
During the programme, General Secretary of People's Development Society Th Birmangol explained that in accordance to the laid down guidelines and plan of Reserve Bank of India/Government of India, there should be one bank in every villages having a population of 2000 people for extending financial services to the people.
Although the plan has already been activated in other parts of the country, there is difficulty in setting up 'brick and mortar' bank branch offices in most part of Manipur.
So, the concept of Business Correspondents has been evolved to facilitate banking facilities.
The Society is one such Business Correspondent which the Government of India has nominated for Manipur Rural Bank for extending banking services.
Without going to a bank, one can now open his or her bank accounts, deposit or withdraw money through a Business Correspondent.
Today's awareness programme is the first of its kind in Manipur, he added.
