Over speeding vehicles worry senior citizens

Imphal, August 21 2016: Speeding vehicles on the expanded portion of Tiddim Road from Keishampat to Malom and non-compliance with traffic rules particularly at road crossings have been creating lots of difficulties to senior citizens and aged persons.

Commenting on The Sangai Express' campaign on traffic management, AK Thanil of Kwakeithel Konjeng Leikai said that expansion and development of Tiddim Road led to faster driving.

On account of the faster driving and the increased width of the road, people particularly aged ones and women have to wait for considerable length of time to cross the road.

He then appealed to the authorities concerned to look into the matter and take up necessary remedies.

Thanil expressed keen desire to construct either foot-bridges or sub-ways in order to facilitate easier crossing of roads.

After Tiddim Road was expanded from Keishampat to Malom, the Government initiated due process to make service lanes as well as footpaths but the same process was abandoned.

Following the general norms applied to National Highways, the divider is cut at standard distances so that people can cross from one side to the other and make U-turns.

However, traffic rules are not followed while crossing the road at these points thereby considerably increasing the chances of road accidents.

One Ranbir of Sawombung said that many under-aged youngsters have been riding/driving two-wheelers as well as cars.

As majority of these youngsters don't know traffic rules, they have been creating lots of traffic problems and difficulties to other travellers.

Konsam Bhorot of Wangjing Keithel Thongwangma said that road accidents have been occurring frequently at Wangjing Keithel-YK College road junction and Wangjing-Heirok junction.

The situation demands immediate attention of the authorities concerned.

No TCP personnel are deployed at these junctions although some personnel are deployed when VIPs move through these junctions, Bhorot said.

One Sinam Sopendro of Lairikyengbam Leikai said that four-wheelers travelling to Khwairamband are not allowed entry beyond Khoyathong.

They are not allowed entry at SS Hotel and Kasturi Bridge from Nagamapal Road.

The entry point from Ima Keithel has also been closed even though two-wheelers are allowed.

Even though there are many short-cuts, people with four-wheelers are compelled to go round and round to enter Khwairamband Keithel.

All these restrictions need to be reviewed, Sopendro said.
