Thangals celebrate tribe recognition: Ngamthang raises unity call

In order to bring peace and tranquility in multi-ethnic State like Manipur, the issue of identity politics and mindset should be kept aside, IFCD Minister Ngamthang Haokip said.
He was speaking at the tribe modification thanksgiving ceremony of Thangal (formerly known as Koirao) tribe at Yaikongpao Village in Senapati district.
Stating that peace is necessary in order to bring development, Ngamthang called upon all concerned in building a common indentity encompassing all communities of the State so as to bring peace and harmony in the State.
The Minister also stressed on the need to extend co-operation to the Government in undertaking developmental activities.
Speaking at the occasion as Special Guest, ex-MP Mani Charenamei said in order to achieve greatness minority or majority never matters while stating that what it all needed is determination to excel in one's chosen field.
Stating that Thangal is one of the indigenous tribes of Manipur, which is appended recognition by the Government, Mani Cheranamei exhorted the people to prove their worth so that the tribe is recognised throughout the globe.
The ex-MP further urged the concerned to work for the recognition of tribal languages.
RD and PR Minister, Francis Ngajokpa, who graced the celebration function as the guest of honour, pointed out that Thangal tribe is known to the world for participating in the resisting the mighty British army who tried to invade Manipur.
Their contribution being recognised by the people, the youth of the tribe should strive hard to defend its name in the coming days, the Minister exhorted.
He also urged the people to work for the preservation and promotion of the culture and tradition of the tribe.
The celebration function, marked by traditional fervour, was presided by President of Thangal Union, H Khangba.
The function was also attended by various Thangal chiefs.
Unfurling of Thangal Union' flag, unveiling of a monument to mark the occasion were another proceedings of the day.
